Is It OCD? Understanding the Cycle
The Loop of Obsessions and Compulsions
OCD is a biological and psychological condition that creates a "false alarm" in the brain. It consists of two main parts:
Obsessions: Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that trigger intense anxiety or disgust (e.g., fears of contamination, harm, or "bad things" happening).
Compulsions: Repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to "fix" the thought or lower the anxiety (e.g., excessive washing, checking, counting, or seeking reassurance).
Common OCD Themes We Treat:
Contamination & Cleaning: Fears of germs or illness leading to rigid rituals.
Harm OCD: Intrusive fears about causing harm to yourself or others.
"Just Right" OCD: An agonizing need for symmetry, order, or exactness.
Pure-O (Purely Obsessional): Intrusive thoughts that occur without visible physical rituals (internal compulsions).
Scrupulosity: Obsessions involving religious or moral "perfection."
Our Specialized OCD Treatment Approach
We use the most effective, research-proven therapies for OCD recovery:
Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)
ERP is the gold standard for OCD. We work together to gradually "expose" you to the thoughts or situations that trigger your anxiety—in a safe, controlled way—while helping you resist the urge to perform the compulsion. This process, called habituation, retrains your brain to realize that the "threat" isn't real and that the anxiety will eventually go away on its own.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
For many, the most difficult part of OCD is the shame associated with intrusive thoughts. ACT therapy teaches you to change your relationship with these thoughts. Instead of fighting them or trying to "solve" them, you learn to see them as "just thoughts"—temporary mental events that don't define who you are.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
We use CBT to identify the "cognitive distortions" (like overestimating threat or needing 100% certainty) that keep the OCD cycle alive.
The Benefits of Online OCD Therapy in Nevada
Treating OCD requires consistent, specialized work, which is often easier to achieve through telehealth:
Real-Life Exposure: Virtual sessions allow us to do ERP in the environment where your triggers actually happen—your home. This makes the therapy more practical and effective.
Privacy and Comfort: Dealing with OCD can feel vulnerable. Meeting from your own space can lower the "barrier of shame," making it easier to be honest about your intrusive thoughts.
Statewide Accessibility: We provide expert care to every rural and urban community in Nevada.
OCD Therapy FAQs
Will my intrusive thoughts ever fully go away?
The goal of ERP isn't necessarily to "delete" the thoughts, but to make them "background noise." Most clients find that as they stop doing compulsions, the thoughts become much less frequent and lose their power to cause distress.
How is OCD different from Generalized Anxiety?
While both involve worry, OCD is defined by the repetitive rituals (compulsions) used to manage the anxiety.
Yes. We are in-network with Aetna, Ambetter, Cigna, Molina Healthcare, Silversummit Healthplan, and United Healthcare. We will handle all the verification and paperwork for you.
